MSNBC is an American cable and satellite television news network that offers news and political commentary on current events from NBC News. The network also has an evening block of programs “Point of View” during prime time. The network is owned by NBC Universal News Group, a division of NBCUniversal, and all of them are owned by Comcast.
MSNBC and its website were founded in 1996 as a partnership between Microsoft and NBC’s General Electric division, hence the name of the network. At the same time, although the network and the site had the same name, msnbc.com and MSNBC had separate corporate structures and conducted independent information programs. msnbc.com was headquartered on the U.S. west coast at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington, and MSNBC was headquartered at NBC in New York.
In 2005, Microsoft disposed of its stake in MSNBC, and in July 2012 it withdrew its stake in msnbc.com. The general news site was renamed NBCNews.com accordingly, and the new msnbc.com was created as the main page of the cable news channel MSNBC.
