Joe Biden discussed a plan to reduce migration flows with Mexican leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
During the phone conversations, Biden suggested addressing the root causes of migration. The two sides discussed U.S.-Mexico cooperation on regional migration issues. Biden’s plan states that more resettlement opportunities and legal alternative immigration routes are needed, as well as better processing of asylum requests and reversing the “draconian” immigration policies of the previous administration, the White House said in a statement.
Biden and Lopez Obrador also agreed to continue active cooperation to stem the flow of illegal migration from Mexico to the United States and vice versa. In addition, they discussed the coronavirus situation and acknowledged the importance of coordination.
