Jen Psaki explained why Biden called Putin before other leaders

The phone conversation between the U.S. and Russian presidents took place back on January 26, but it still keeps American journalists on their toes. At a recent White House briefing, press secretary Joe Biden was asked why he called Vladimir Putin before some of the leaders of countries with which Washington has friendlier relations.

Jen Psaki attributed the urgency of the call to the fact that “the expiration of the START Treaty,” the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, was approaching.

“But basically all the other calls to date have been to partners and allies in Asia and Europe,” Psaki concluded.
