A group of Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives says they are ready to submit an article as early as Monday to impeach President Donald Trump.
“We will introduce an article for impeachment on Monday – during the House of Representatives meeting,” Congressman Ted Lew, one of the authors of the document, tweeted.
He noted that 180 people have already expressed support for the prepared article.
Democrats are trying to remove Trump from power without waiting for the inauguration of his successor Joe Biden on January 20. In their view, Trump cannot stay in the White House because he is responsible for the recent riots in Washington, D.C., in which a group of supporters of the incumbent broke into the building of Congress.
It is expected that Democrats in the House of Representatives may have time to declare impeachment using an expedited procedure. However, the U.S. Senate, in which Republicans have a majority, will either reject the impeachment motion or simply delay consideration of the issue.
