A balloon ride for seven people in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate tragically ended. The pilot of the aircraft was killed and two tourists were seriously injured, the Welt newspaper reported citing local police.

It happened on a Sunday night. The balloon was already on its way to landing when it was hit by a barrage of wind that prevented the pilot from making a safe landing. The wind blew the balloon into the farmland and hit the ground several times. At the same time, four tourists were literally thrown out of the passenger basket. Then the balloon suddenly soared up and landed on the slope of the steep Rhine bank. There the rescuers found the other three victims. As it immediately turned out, the balloon commander was dead. Two passengers were seriously injured. They were immediately taken to the hospital.

The names of the victims are still not being reported. There’s an ongoing investigation into the tragedy.
